Way back in 1955, a cool (and very handy) guy named Red Brummel sold his house and used the proceeds to buy a hardware store in the Godwin Heights neighborhood of Grand Rapids. He made plumbing service calls while his wife, Louise, ran the hardware store. Word of Red’s talent with pipes and fixtures soon spread – and by 1957, he was working with area real estate developers to install new plumbing into area homes and businesses. That work drove him to build the largest inventory of plumbing parts on this side of the state, a collection that gave rise to the famous slogan we debuted in the late 60s: “Godwin’s Got It!”
Godwin’s Mission and Vision
Our mission is to provide our customers with the best customer service, treating our employees and their families as if they were ours, and giving back to our community.
Our vision is to be the go-to for our local businesses and homeowners for anything they need that falls under our areas of service. We want all who live in our area to know that it’s been true since we began in 1955, and it’s still true today — Godwin’s got it!
We support our mission and vision with the things we value, what we call: “The Godwin Way.”
We desire to honor God and live the way the Bible shows us to. Faith is the motivation behind our work and our mission and values are all based on this one.
We define family as a social group of people who care and provide for each other, which can mean your blood relatives, your friends, or your teammates. At Godwin, we’re a family, and that is evident in the way we care for our team members, our customers, and our community.
We believe in always doing our best, no matter the situation. We promise to provide high-quality, professional work and friendly, reliable service, which builds trust with our customers.
We love to share what we have and what we know. This means we provide on-the-job education for our team members, we share our knowledge with our customers, and we share our resources with our local community.
Godwin Gives Back
Over the years, we’ve sponsored and supported organizations in and around West Michigan and beyond! One such organization is The Ebenezer Discipleship Training Center, located in Haiti. Its mission is to empower and enable the indigenous church in Haiti through discipleship, job creation, and self sustainability. This organization is special to us here at Godwin. We sell their Blue Bean Coffee at our hardware store!
