How to Prep Your HVAC System for Fall and Winter

October 30, 2025

As temperatures start to drop, your HVAC system becomes one of the most important parts of your home. Making sure it’s ready for the colder months ahead can save you energy, prevent breakdowns, and keep your family warm and comfortable all season long. Here are some simple steps to prepare your heating system for fall and winter.

Replace or Clean Your Air Filters

This is one of the easiest and most effective things you can do to keep your HVAC system running efficiently. A dirty filter restricts airflow, causing your system to work harder and use more energy. Replace disposable filters every 1–3 months to maintain good air quality and airflow.

Check Your Thermostat Settings

When the seasons change, so should your thermostat settings. As you switch from cooling to heating, set your thermostat to a comfortable temperature (typically around 68°F when you’re home and a few degrees lower when you’re asleep or away). These small adjustments can make a noticeable difference on your energy bill without sacrificing comfort.

If your home still uses a manual or basic programmable thermostat, fall is the perfect time to consider an upgrade. Smart thermostats can automatically adjust the temperature based on your daily schedule, weather conditions, and even when you’re on your way home. Many models can be controlled right from your smartphone, allowing you to fine-tune your comfort while saving energy.

Over time, a smart thermostat can pay for itself through lower heating and cooling costs and help your HVAC system run more efficiently by preventing unnecessary strain.

Inspect and Clean Vents and Ducts

Blocked vents or dusty ducts can limit airflow and cause uneven heating. Vacuum your vents and make sure furniture or rugs aren’t blocking them. If you notice excessive dust or inconsistent temperatures between rooms, it may be time for a professional duct cleaning.

Schedule a Professional Tune-Up

Just like your car, your HVAC system needs regular maintenance to perform its best. A professional technician can inspect your system, clean internal components, check for leaks, and make sure everything is running safely and efficiently. Fall is the perfect time to schedule your tune-up before the cold weather hits.

Inspect Carbon Monoxide Detectors

If you have a gas furnace, it’s important to ensure your carbon monoxide detectors are working properly. Replace batteries if needed and test each detector to make sure they’ll alert you to any potential issues.

Seal Air Leaks and Insulate

Even a well-maintained HVAC system can’t keep up if your home leaks warm air. Check around doors, windows, and attic spaces for drafts. Sealing leaks and adding insulation can help your system run more efficiently and keep your home cozier through winter.
