How to Spot a Hidden Water Leak

July 16, 2026

Not every leak announces itself with a puddle on the kitchen floor. Some of the sneakiest ones hide behind walls or under your floors while quietly running up your water bill and causing damage long before you notice a drop.

The signs are usually small at first. Keep an eye out for:

  • A water bill that's climbed with no explanation. If your usage habits haven't changed but the bill has, that's often the first clue.
  • A water meter that keeps moving. Turn off every faucet and appliance in the house, then check your meter. If it's still ticking, water's going somewhere it shouldn't.
  • Musty smells or unexplained mold. Moisture loves dark, hidden spaces, and mold follows close behind.
  • Warm spots on the floor. This one usually points to a hot water line leak beneath a slab.
  • Cracks in drywall or flooring, or paint that's bubbling. Water pressure behind a wall has to go somewhere.
  • A suspiciously green patch of lawn. If one area is thriving while the rest of your yard looks normal, an underground line might be feeding it.

Why it matters more than you'd think

A small leak doesn't stay small. Left alone, it can lead to structural damage, mold growth, and water bills that you’d rather avoid. The earlier it's caught, the simpler (and cheaper) the fix.

Give yourself a head start with a water detector alarm

A simple water detector alarm sits near common trouble spots (think under sinks, by the water heater, next to the washing machine, etc.) and sounds off the second it senses moisture where it shouldn't be.

Grabbing one of these devices is a small, inexpensive way to catch a problem in minutes instead of months. Pick one up at Godwin Hardware and get ahead of the leak before it gets ahead of you.

What to do if you suspect a leak

You don't have to start tearing into walls to figure this out. Start with the meter test above to confirm whether water is moving somewhere it shouldn't be. From there, give us a call. We'll track down exactly where the leak is hiding and walk you through what it'll take to fix it, no guesswork and no surprises.

Think you might have a hidden leak? Contact Godwin Plumbing and let's take care of it before it becomes an even bigger headache.
