Tips For Starting A Garden

May 25, 2023

We’re all ready for the spring. The weather is finally getting warmer, and you’re ready to kick off the season by gardening. An ambitious project for some, but we are confident that you’ll end the season with a flourishing garden. That’s why we wanted to give you some helpful tips to start you off right.

Get the right tools.

Listen, we’re all for getting our hands dirty. But, we do think that having the right tools help starting a garden much easier. Pick up any shovels, trowels, soil, and gloves. It’ll make it easier, we promise.

Thankfully, Godwin Hardware has all the tools needed to start and manage your garden. Come visit us, and let our team help you find exactly what you need.

Do you have the right soil for your garden?

The soil you choose does have an effect on your seeds. We highly recommend investing in soil that is nutrient-rich and well-drained. If your preexisting soil doesn’t meet your plants standards, pick up some garden soil to help give your seeds the nutrition they need to blossom.

The ground should be free of debris and weeds.

Plants are going to be a bit fussy if they have to grow around weeds and other debris. Clearing the space around your garden will help make sure you’re giving them the space to grow. Rake up the debris, hoe the dirt to clear weeds, and use a trowel to dig holes for your seeds.

Choose plants that are well-suited to your growing zone.

You’re not going to be able to grow banana trees in the Midwest (sorry, we’re bummed about it too). Do some research about what plants thrive in your area, and start with those! Then, as you continue your gardening adventure, you can start branching out to test some new green friends in your garden.

Add some mulch.

Applying a layer of mulch helps reduce weeds by blocking out sun, and reduces moisture loss so you’ll have to water less around your plants. Our recommendation is about 2 to 3 inches deep around each plant.

Feed your plants regularly!

Like humans, plants need water to survive. Each plant you grow will have different watering times and amounts. Stay close to a water source, so it makes it easier to water. You don’t want to lug your hose around the yard if it’s not necessary.

About a month after you’ve started your garden, make sure you’re adding plant nutrition to your soil. Starting with the soil is important, but plant food is even better in achieving garden success!

Gardening takes time, patience, and a lot of learning each season. Starting off the right way can save you from some sad (and possibly dead) plants.
